The Ultimate 14-Day South Island Road Trip Itinerary

New Zealand's South Island (Te Waipounamu) offers some of the most spectacular alpine scenery on Earth. This 14-day loop balances mountain vistas, glacial lakes, and coastal wildlife without overwhelming your driving schedule.
Days 1–3: Christchurch to Aoraki / Mount Cook
Begin your journey in Christchurch before heading inland across the Canterbury Plains towards Lake Tekapo. Known for its brilliant turquoise waters caused by glacial flour, Lake Tekapo is also part of the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve.
Drive southwest along Lake Pukaki towards Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park. Allocate a full day to hike the Hooker Valley Track, a flat 10km return trail crossing three swing bridges with views of Mueller Lake and Mount Cook’s 3,724-meter peak.
Days 4–7: Wanaka & Queenstown Adventure Hub
Cross Lindis Pass into Wanaka. Climb Roy's Peak for sunrise if weather permits, or opt for the gentler Mt Iron track. Wanaka offers a relaxed coffee culture before you make the short mountain drive over the Crown Range to Queenstown.
In Queenstown, experience world-class jet boating on the Shotover River or ride the Skyline Gondola to Bob's Peak for views over Lake Wakatipu and The Remarkables mountain range.
Days 8–11: Fiordland National Park & Milford Sound
Base yourself in Te Anau before taking the world-renowned Milford Road. Stop at Eglinton Valley, Mirror Lakes, and the Homer Tunnel before embarking on a cruise across Milford Sound to view Mitre Peak and cascading waterfalls.
Days 12–14: West Coast Glaciers & Arthur’s Pass
Head north along the wild West Coast highway through Haast Pass, stopping at Fox Glacier and Franz Josef. Complete the loop back to Christchurch via the dramatic Arthur’s Pass alpine highway.
